DAY THIRTY. One last, before I call it a day, for closure’s sake. :)

There was a time in my life when I preferred separating images from words. I didn’t like putting images in my blogs and would rather keep them in one place (like, in flickr or multiply), something akin to how Sam (character played by Sean Pen in the movie I Am Sam) wanted the lima beans on his plate separated from the corn because he didn’t like seeing green and yellow together. I never really got around to understanding my autistic tendencies, ugh, but I’m just glad I’m over that stage.

Now, I feel like there’s something wrong if I blogged something without a photo in it. I love the idea of combining these two powerful art forms together to convey a message. (Someday, my message, and my art, will have more depth, just you wait!)

I thought it was nice to look back to the past month through these photographs. I mean, come on, who’s crazy enough to look back by reading through all 33 posts from that day up to now? I’m just so glad there are photos to look back to — after all, they speak in a way that no words can do (and in less amount of time as well).

So.. I think that’s it. My 30 awesome days, over and done with. I know it’s a cheesy thing to say, but to be honest, this past month has really changed me in more ways than one (uhm) six.

What’s up for me after this? Well, for one, I will continue blogging. Maybe you’ll see my pessimistic self resurfacing once again now that I’m not obligated to write about life’s awesomeness anymore, lol. And then I’d rant about my failures again (yay, I can’t wait, lol). But at least now I know better than to hit publish without realizing the silverlinings first. If only for that simple reminder — to see beauty and joy in the most everyday of places, and in the most random of things — I think the past 30 days was worth it, indeed.

Thank you, one and all, for keeping up with me.

Stay awesome. :)

Xoxo, Riz

DAY TWENTYNINE. Remember how it was like in high school, just before graduation day? The seniors, day after their final exams, wouldn’t have classes anymore and would just come to school to rehearse for the graduation ceremony, maybe work on their last remaining requirements, but mostly spend the remaining days of high school hanging out, relaxing, and reminiscing the years that passed.

I know. That’s kinda how I felt the past few days, like graduating. Still two more posts remaining to end this 30 days, and already, I was taking a break and celebrating the end of it. That, or I really just felt like stalling. :P

Okay. Now on with my last two posts.

To say that I learned a lot of things from this little project is an understatement. Now I’m happy to say with conviction that creating a habit and developing some form of discipline is *really* possible in a span of 30 days.

Here are some musings, which you can also consider as “tips” in case you’d like to embark on this project too.

1. 30 days is just right. There are so many numbers to choose from — 365 days, 52 weeks, 1000 awesome things, 500 days of summer (heh) — but 30 days is, IMO, just enough to be considered an achievement without making you feel obligated at some point. Sure, there were days when you’d feel you wouldn’t be able to make it, and you’d like to just drop everything off.

The first week would be spent feeling your way around. In the second week you would feel a bit of pressure, and maybe some doubts if you really can make it. Third week, you’d start to feel like you can blog with your eyes closed, as if it’s as normal as eating or washing the dishes. And in the fourth week you’d start relaxing a bit, along with feeling sentimental about ending something that somehow changed you for the better.

Overall, 30 days is just right for me. (And for you, too!) IMO, it’s perfect for those people who’ve been keeping their own blogs for years but are only updating them sporadically.

2. Anything can be awesome. (Also, anything can be bloggable). In the past four weeks, I’ve blogged about the simplest of things, which is perhaps the very essence of this month’s theme. If you know me from way back, you’d understand how un-likely it is for me to be thinking of positive things more than the negative ones. I’m a pessimist to the core, I’ve said it before. And to impose on myself to appreciate the simple joys that come with each passing day for one whole month (even in the worst of days) is considerably an achievement in itself. And true enough, the days came when it’s not that difficult anymore to think of grand and awesome things, however simple these things may seem. There will always be something to blog about everyday, whether it’s the new shop you came across, or the recipe you discovered, the book you’re reading, or the last movie you watched.

3. It’s not just about you, it’s about your readers as well. I have witnessed those days when blogs were simply online diaries, where bloggers would simply rant about their days, not caring really if people read their juvenile online drama or not (been there, done that). Blogging has evolved a lot ever since, and bloggers have become more particular about providing real information for the readers other than what they ate for breakfast or how awful their day had been.

I still write in the first person, and I will keep on doing so, after all, this is still an online journal. However, I’ve come to terms with what’s more important, and that is to share something about myself or about the things that I love, with the intention of having people benefit from them somehow. Moreover, I’m very happy to have known new people and found new sites in the course of this project, much thanks to all of you for sending me emails and comments, otherwise, I wouldn’t have known you awesome people.

4. Spread the link love, don’t hold back. As an SEO, I’ve been trained at one point to preserve as much inbound links as possible (unless they pay you), so as not to transfer “link juice” and dilute your page’s overall linking power. But screw SEO! I enjoy so much freely re-posting photographs by other people, and backtracking other people’s blogs, and quite honestly, the links I’ve thrown here and there have brought people back to my site as well.

5. Explore other creative forms of blogging. In the past month I did a couple of typecasting, mobile blogging, and visual blogging, and I enjoyed each one of them! More so, it was fun finding people who are doing the same thing, i.e. the typecasters are typewriter-loving people I never knew existed until recently, when I developed this newfound love for typewriters. I wish I was able to typecast more than I did this month, but I still have to work on my typing skills. I’ll make sure to have more quality bonding moments with Henry soon and hopefully join the ranks of people who bring their typewriters to Starbucks to do something creative.

5. Follow through. Of course there’s more after 30 days, there’s got to be. The point of this 30 Day Challenge, after all, is to create the habit of blogging (although I do remember wanting to prove something, haha, when I decided to do this). I remember the last time I had a small talk with Abe of Yugatech, back when he held a Blogging Seminar in USAP. It’s been almost a year since, but one thing I do remember about our short exchange of thoughts was him advising me to “just be consistent” if I want something to work. Now that’s something to live by from the expert himself.

So, who else is trying out this 30 day challenge? Liz is nearing finish line, and Reah’s on her 9th day. Join the club! :)

Long rant. Sorry. Didn’t mean to.

DAY TWENTYEIGHT. Confession: I had nightmares of real-life friends committing suicide during the few weeks that I was reading Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides. No drama, just them doing their normal day-to-day activities with slashed #wrists. It wasn’t really creepy, mind you, it was more of funny really, but still weird.

This morning, on my desk

I’m not saying that The Virgin Suicides was so disturbing it brought me nightmares, nope. I reckon it’s really just how it is with books. Compared to watching films, reading books allows you to imagine the story yourself and create your own pictures in your head, and it just so happened that my imaginations involved my real life friends. Er.

Now movie-fying a novel is something else. Sometimes, we really have to stop comparing a book to its movie version (and vice versa) if we don’t want to disappoint ourselves.

Exhibit A: I remember reading Nicholas Sparks’ A Walk To Remember long before there were news of a film version. My high school self cried over the pages of Jamie Sullivan’s life, and I remember it well because I didn’t read a lot in high school (save for the Sweet Valley High and Love Stories phase we all had to go through) and AWTR was the first book I ever really shed tears over. The only other book I couldn’t put down in high school was Catcher in the Rye, but that’s a different story. Watching AWTR’s movie version was a disappointment, I remember clearly, because I kept comparing it to the book, and I didn’t like how the movie ended with Jamie’s death. To me, the book had a create-your-own-ending thing going on, and in my ending, Jamie survived cancer and lived a full life with Landon. In the movie, she died.

Exhibit B: It’s just like how I didn’t enjoy watching Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince the first time around. I’m not saying I didn’t enjoy these movies. It’s just that comparisons between the book and the movie are inevitable and they can make or break the movie altogether.

Now there are movies, on the other hand, that are better than their book version.

Exhibit C: P.S. I Love You by Cecelia Ahern is the most boring book ever. (I only took time to read it because the other P.S. I Love You by Barbara Conklin — the real P.S. I Love You where P.S. was Paul Strobe — was an integral part of my adolescence, and anything with the same title is subject to serious scrutiny). Then again, however sucky and dragging and emotionless the book was, the movie (featuring Hilary Swank and Gerard Butler) is something I wouldn’t mind playing over and over again.

Exhibit D: I didn’t get to finish reading The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger because I thought the chronology of events was confusing. Mae, however, after reading the book, declared it to be “the greatest love story ever”, but that’s Mae, and she’s a masochist, so her thoughts are not counted. Hah! (Just kidding, I trust Mae’s judgment with all my heart.) And because it’s the “greatest love story ever”, Joni, Mae and I watched it last night and we all agreed that the movie version was better than the book.

The Time Traveler’s Wife is pretty much “up there”, joining the ranks of the classics — Casablanca, Titanic haha, Gone with the Wind, and Romeo & Juliet. Rachel McAdams was the perfect Clare, and Eric Bana’s tushy was indeed interesting to.. uhm, watch. Seriously though, TTW is one of the most awesome love story I’ve ever seen in the past decade. It’s the kind of film that makes you confused if you’re going to cry or smile, so you end up doing both. It’s the kind that makes you ponder about life, and how love is tested by time, and time measured by love; the kind that makes you want to embrace the consequences of your choices in the past without having regrets long after the closing credits have gone and you’re back home in your bed with just your thoughts.

And you know how romantic comedies that reach this certain level of awesome are rare, especially when the book it was adapted from was mediocre. So yeah, kudos to The Traveler’s Wife, the movie.

Lastly,

..there are movie adaptations that are just as you read in the book, spot on.

Exhibit E: So now I try to transition back to The Virgin Suicides after such a long introduction (LOL, I really started this post with the intention of writing about The Virgin Suicides, and there I was ranting a truckload about other books and movies). Ugh. So.. The Virgin Suicides. I read the book, had a couple of nightmares, and the other day, when I finally watched the movie I just recently finished downloading, I was so amazed that I did what I’d always do about these important matters of my life: I twitted about it. (Oh, and Mara agreed in an instant!)

You just can’t NOT TWIT about watching TVS. No really. Try watching it.

Kirsten Dunst played the role of Lux Lisbon so perfectly, justifying her very description in the book as being “the stillpoint of a turning world.” Josh Hartnett was the omyy-is-that-you-Josh-Hartnett-perfect Trip Fontaine. (The long retro hair did it, IMO). The boys and their proper manners, the high-waist jeans and printed neckties, the prom night and the girls’ matching dresses that were sewn out of the same fabric, Cecilia and her laminated photos of Virgin Mary, Bonnie’s first kiss under the bleachers, Lux waking up alone in the football field after the prom — they were all *almost* as they were described in the book. More importantly, the Lisbon sisters were just as I imagined them to be — not psychos, but happy and beautiful kids enjoying their youth as best as their situation would allow them. (Other than Lux, Mary Lisbon will always be my favorite). Even the narrations were exactly as in the book!

The Virgin Suicides, however ancient the film is, is something worth waiting days to download for. Trust me.

I’m not sure if I enjoyed the book or the movie more than the other. If something this rare happens to you, then the story must be really good.

DAY TWENTYSIX. Although it may look like I’m starting to get lenient about my 30-day challenge and posting late, I’m as determined as ever to reach finish line. The delays you’re seeing is mostly me, stalling, because for some reason I don’t want this 30 days to end. Ugh. Senti much? More thoughts on this later.

Meanwhile, remember when I won a print from one of Simply Hues‘ contests? I’ve been exchanging Etsy convos with Chelsea Lee, the photographer who’s sending me my *ehem* prize, and here are some of her photographs that I would’ve picked if I’m not limited to just one.

Guess which one I picked? :)

Check out Chelsea’s blog and etsy store!

On another note, I’m going to announce who won the Camera Charm Earrings later today! I’ll try my best not to post the results past midnight as per usual, promise! Watch out for it tonight, 9:00PM! :)

DAY TWENTYFIVE. I’ve had this photo on reserve for some time now, in case I run out of ideas. At one point I thought I wouldn’t need to get these cute skeletons out my closet anymore because there were just a lot of things I could blog about, however, I always knew that this little photoshoot I had with the pandas lying around my house would come in handy sometime. (I have 2 more stuffed pandas not in this picture. Why hello there, I’m 26 years old.)

Behold, the time is now.

Gone are the days when teddy bears are the cutest thing. For some reason, R has been showering me with pandas instead of teddy bears, and suddenly, these lazy creatures have become the most adorable in the planet, even if all they do is sleep, eat, and sneeze. Do yourself a favor and look around Just G boutiques in nearby malls. I tell you, the pandas. are. everywhere. The eco-friendly striped sling bag in the photo above is actually from Just G. (And I love it!)

Also, if these pandas at etsy didn’t make you smile one bit, you’re a freakin’ robot!

By the way, which panda are you?

R says he’s the last one, or the second one on top. Figures. I think I’m the one chasing a butterfly, or the one stuck in a mesh of Christmas lights. (Which reminds me, I still need to find twinkling lights to put up in my room!)

I’m sorry to be wasting your time reading this nonsense of a blog. I’m so boring. :(

OAN, these are what’s even more awesome about today:

Ohh there are more people who joined the giveaway, more than I expected actually, but I’m linking these girls who took time to write something on their blogs about the “contest” and what’s on their desks. It’s overwhelming how you all humored me and agreed to blog about something as mundane as what I asked you guys. Thanks, everyone, you’re all awesome! And now, because you all made me sooo happy with your posts, I’m giving away a few more earrings to those who took time to catch up.

(So yes, Romz, Joni, Mae, and Maia, I’ll send you guys earrings too.) Email me your shipping addresses, if you haven’t yet! (Or LOL, Mae and Joni, KAPE para tipid sa shipping!) :)

Plus, everyone gets to be part of the Camera Charm Earrings raffle! Watch out for the winner on Wednesday. :)

And one more awesome thing that made me jump up and down this afternoon when I found out about it. Time.com linked to our very own Cubao-X.com from one of their travel articles! Check it out! It’s a tiny little link, but it made me soooo happy. :)

Tonight I sleep a happy panda! *insert drunken panda here* zzz.

DAY TWENTYFOUR. As someone who’s been shopping online a lot, I know a great online shop when I find one. In Multiply alone, I can vouch for Sheila’s In the Fishbowl, and Joni’s Foot & Knots, and again, not just because they’re my friends! There’s also Tot Couture, Make Up Kit, and The Only Ukay Queen.

And no, don’t let me start on Etsy, I’d go crazy listing down online shops I’ve come across that made it to my bookmarks. Etsy and Bigcartel (among others) are popular venues to buy and sell pretty stuff among Americans, Canadians, and Europeans. Here in the Philippines however, Multiply is where most independent sellers find their market.

Today, my featured online shop is Aurus‘ Purple Beet, who is currently having a site-wide sale (up to 50% off) to celebrate the shop’s first year anniversary. Each item is unique and handcrafted by Aurus herself. She’s got the cutest charms and beads — rare finds indeed!

Here are some of her products that caught my fancy. (More after the jump!)

By the way, I love Multiply shops that have, not only awesome products, but neat and user-friendly design/layout too. I don’t care if you’re selling unique and branded products, if your online shop is overflowing with blinkies and background music (oh please!), I tell you, you’re losing a lot of sales! And don’t waste your time adding me as your contact. I would have rejected you even before I start browsing your items.

But okaaaayyyy. That’s for a separate blog post altogether. Heh. Composure.

What I’m just trying to say is, Aurus is not only selling pretty items, her classy taste in design and colors is also evident in the overall look and feel of her online shop — which also adds credibility points to her as an artist selling her craft. You get what I’m saying? :)

Here’s more of Aurus’ stuff that I like.

+ I have a thing for pandas. (Teddy bears are soooo 1990s.)

+ Fishies! And Starfishies!! :)

+ “Made for an Angel,” ahhh. I think my friend Ivy‘s going to love this one. Angels are her thing. Err, at least this one particular Angel. Ahem.

+ And this.

+ Now this one looks familiar. Oh, yeah. I have one of these! :) It’s one of my favorite every-where-accessory, goes well with rugged, casual, or semi-formal attires. :)

+ Lastly, here’s a pretty blue beadwork. I think I’m going to order this. :)

So yeah. Hoard while they’re on sale! Go go go!

*Apparently, some of these items I posted here may not be available anymore. But she has more pretty stuff in her store that are still available.

OAN, my giveaway challenge is still on! Come join the fun! :D

DAY TWENTYTHREE. I’m nearing the end of my 30 days, I have exactly 7 days (and 7 posts) left, woot! As promised, here’s a little giveaway to all 5 of you, LOL, (excluding my Mum) who have been following my progress in this 30 day blog challenge.

The timing couldn’t have been more perfect! Aside from Mariel’s sharpie, I just won something from Vicki’s blog too (yay!), and knowing how good it feels to be a recipient of something that comes from the heart, I’m hoping that the simple items I’m giving away now will also bring joy to those who gets to have them.

Forgive me for being a bit carried away. Following my post about those pretty little things that make us women smile, I was really just planning to toss some pearl earrings and buttons into little brown envelops, send them over, and get it over and done with. But I’ve been too inspired by all of you lovely people that I thought I’d put in extra effort to make these little packages a bit more special. (Like I said, it’s often the extra mile that counts.) :)

So okay. I shall be quick with the mechanics.

I have 6 pearl earrings of different colors, each of their cardboard holders (that I made myself, ehem) has writings that say something about the color’s personality*. I only have 6 packages to give away so be very quick! To join, all you have to do is to answer this question by posting a photo in your blog and/or flickr accounts:

What’s on top of your desk? :)

Take a top-view photo of your desk — the same way I’ve been doing in most of my 30-day blog challenge photos — put it up in your blog, link back to this page, and leave a comment here so I would see your post. The first 6 people to leave a comment here gets the pearl earring package from me. :)

But wait, there’s more! I know you must be eye-ing that pair of Camera Charm earrings in the photo above. I only have one pair of that, so I’m going to have it raffled! :) Assuming there are more than 6 people (lol) reading this blog, and all the pearl earrings are already taken, you still have a chance of winning this Camera Charm earrings! Everyone who’s able to post a top-view photo of her desk in her blog gets to be part of the raffle. On Wednesday next week, I’ll announce who wins this:

Is this something you’d be interested to have? :)

Also, here are the 6 giveaways to choose from, for the first 6 responders. Each package comes with a pair of pearl earrings, a button, and some words of inspiration, coupled with lots of love from me. :)

Alright, game starts now. :)

*The writings about the color personalities are not my own words, they’re from Colorscope of www.paper-source.com

TWENTYTWO. Why hello there. I was away from the internet almost the whole day, hence, managed to accumulate piles of work up to my neck. Who cares. My day was well-spent, I wouldn’t want it any other way — a trip to the mall, a dip in a freezing-cold pool (note to high-rise hotel establishments, rooftop pools need to have heater at all times, especially if you pride yourself of having a jacuzzi), delicious food, some rounds of poker, and a lot of fun and laughter among friends.

Now, my nose is about to dive into my trackpad — I’m so tired and sleepy — so I’m making this short, sweet, and visual.

Here’s a photo I took in Tagaytay sometime in June, treated with blue and purple hues. I just love how it turned out. :)

Suddenly, my addiction to purple and blue has become undeniable. Exhibit A: This blog’s template; Exhibit B: My multiply account’s layout; Exhibit C: My twitter design; Exhibit D: A few weeks back, being inspired by Bella’s Room. I just can’t get enough of purple and blue!

Creative Mint has perfected the color schemes in my head:

Pretty, eh? :) How can one not be inspired by these beauties? Check out Creative Mint‘s lovely inspiration boards! If her work did not inspire you to do something creative yourself, I don’t know what will. :)

Btw, watch out for my 30-day challenge giveaway tomorrow! I promise I won’t disappoint. For now, I sleep. Zzzzz.

DAY TWENTYONE. It finally came. :) This red Sharpie, an office supply giveaway by Nyminutenow, was delivered to me yesterday all the way from the Big Apple. What a way to brighten one’s day. ♥ Thanks, Mariel. :)

I love receiving packages and snail mails — the excitement is just overwhelming, compared to receiving emails, texts, and twits that we’re so used to getting everyday, you know what I’m saying? It’s heartwarming to know that someone would take the extra mile to hand-write a letter, place a stamp, and drop by the post office (or the nearby mailbox) to send a little something to the other side of the world.

I guess that’s why I love the idea of typecasting. You’d rant the same random things, but the extra effort makes blogging a little more special. :)

And don’t you just love giveaways? I do! And I’m going to give away a few little things too, I just found the perfect giveaways tonight. So watch out for it, because I’m going to post it on Friday, in time for Day 23, same as her. :)

DAY TWENTY. A few people asked me what my job is exactly because I seem to be working everywhere and with so much time in my hands. Well, I don’t really have a lot of time in my hands, lol, however, my flexible schedule allows me to work anytime, anywhere (as long as I have my laptop with me and some fast internet connection).

I’m still doing Internet Marketing and SEO (and no, please don’t ask me what that is), only this time, I’m doing it home-based. After my two-year stint with US Auto Parts (USAP) as part of their Search Engine Marketing team, and, give-or-take four years doing Internet Marketing both full-time and freelance, I decided to take the leap and do things my own way.

And just for the record, since we’re at it, my work experience with USAP was nothing short of awesome. They were kind to me, gave me my biggest break, sent me to New York for training, and trusted me with responsibilities I would never entrust myself. It is there in USAP (and under Marc‘s mentorship) where I was able to envision how I’d like my future to be like, and how to do it. I wouldn’t even know half of what I know about the industry I’m now in if not for the opportunity to pick Marc’s brains (heh) and to work with the best marketing team in the world. It’s the best training ground for those who want to take Internet Marketing seriously, if I do say so myself. At one point I really thought I was going to stay there for good because I loved the people and my job there. Resigning was not in the original plan, but I guess I was able to resign because, admittedly, they were able to equip me enough to take on the next chapter of my career.

Which brings us to now, and this work-from-home status. I’ve been doing this for the past 5 months, and here’s some of the things about working from home that you might want to be aware of, before you start taking the leap yourself.

THE PROS.

No more 8:00-5:00 work-days.

This is probably one of the major factors why I decided to try working from home. At one point being a corporate slave, I have developed some form of insomnia that made it so hard to wake up in the morning, and, even if I was able to drag my feet to the office, my entire morning would still be spent doing my job in a trance. Mornings were not productive. Afternoons were spent cramming on things I should’ve finished earlier. You get the drift. And I’m sure you know what I mean when I say that the 8-5 schedule is really bound to get monotonous and draining, especially for people (like me) who have varied interests.

Now, I can start my day anytime I want. I know it’s not healthy, but my most favorite time to work is still at way past midnight, when it’s quiet and no one’s bugging me on YM. More so, I can take long breaks in between and just make up for the lost hours anytime within the day.

Work from anywhere.

Every Monday, I’d take my laptop to our church’s Youth Center, and sit in a quiet corner to get some work done. Last month, I was in Tagaytay, and then in Cebu, and I can go to these places and still get my work done without going through the torture of filing Leave forms and/or asking permission from my boss. Once in a while, I would hang out in a coffee shop when I’m starting to get sick of my home office. Often, I would take my laptop to bed and work there.

In the next few months, I’m hoping to take on short trips to places in Asia, and maybe a long trip to Sydney before the year ends. And I love not having to worry about leaving my work behind (and not getting paid). I can work literally anywhere, and somehow, the regular changes in environment stimulate my mind even more, increasing my output and allowing me to be more productive.

More time to do things I love.

Related to having a flexible schedule, now I can practice my photography, involve in church activities more, blog/write more, read books, engage in possible business opportunities, travel, cook (or at least learn to).

Photography is impossible to do when you have an 8-5 job, unless maybe you want to specialize in taking photos of staplers and ballpens and computers (ugh). Taking photographs with natural daylight is the most awesome thing; I say, you’re missing a lot on daytime and sunlight when you’re confined to the four walls of your office within the day, leaving only when it’s already dark.

Oh, and cook! I have a pretty nice kitchen in my unit, and I’m glad to be able to just take a break, hop to the kitchen from my desk and cook something. I’m no Rachael Ray, but I really enjoy my own Martha Moments. ;)

& CONS.

The workload is the same, if not heavier.

Because I work everywhere and in my own time, people would often mistaken it as not doing anything at all. Family and friends would expect me to be present in family gatherings, trips, church activities, etc, all the time, as if I’m a bum and don’t have a job. The thing with this set-up is, while it allows me to do other things within the day and start working in my own pace and time, the workload is still somewhat the same, if not heavier. At the end of the day, I have to deliver the same (or even more) amount of work as, say, when I was still in USAP. Hence I have to work in the wee hours of the morning, finishing stuff I wasn’t able to do because I was doing other things during the day. When I was in Tagaytay and Cebu, I had to excuse myself to get some work done in between swimming and chatting with cousins, etc. You see, I’m still doing this full-time (not part-time or freelance), except that I’m home-based.

One-man show.

One thing I really miss about the corporate set-up is having to brush elbows with the most awesome professionals in this field, the regular coffee breaks with real people, the face-to-face meetings (not just YM conferences), and blurting random thoughts to Maia, who I used to share a cubicle with. Sometimes, an entire day would pass by without being able to have an interaction with a human being, save for twits, YMs, and FB chats.

I do, however, have virtual workmates, a client who would bug me on YM every now and then to get updates on my tasks, including a team here in Manila who’s doing the work with me on a freelance basis. Simple tasks delegated to them are often delayed though, because they’re only doing it freelance, and that’s another thing I have to deal with. Not that I’m complaining. However frustrating sometimes, it’s one of the things I expected to encounter when I took this job anyway. Besides, my autistic, anti-social self somehow enjoys working alone. :)

Delayed remittances, taxes, admin-related stuff.

While most people would wait for the 15th and the 30th of the month to get their salaries, those dates do not mean anything to me. Managing my finances is something I have to master, (ohhh and am failing at, lol) since money does not come like clockwork. I have to file my own taxes as well, and SSS, etc — oh the pain. I do not have a health card also, hence, I have to pay for my own medicines and trips to the hospital. I have to personally work on getting my ITR if I want to apply for a car loan, or a credit card, etc. The paperwork part sucks.

STILL, IT’S AWESOME.

There are a lot of pains to working at home, however, I cannot imagine myself doing anything else at this point in my life. Of course we can always find something wrong about everything, but one has to prioritize what you acknowledge to be most important in your life. To some, it’s stability and getting semi-monthly paychecks on time, or the training that comes with working with a team, for which they have to endure the pains of a corporate set-up. To others, it’s having the freedom to do things at their own pace and time, and to venture in business opportunities where they can be their own boss, for which they have to take the leap and find clients that would hire them to do home-based work.

For me, I recognize that this where God wants me to be right now, and so far, I’m loving it, for all the reasons stated above.
