You’re probably thinking about blogging for a while now but the idea of actually setting it up just overwhelms the life out of you.
I can almost imagine you now, daydreaming about what ifs and why nots, ideas flowing and heart’s bursting with excitement. YOU have a story to tell the world and you’re convinced that blogging is the most effective way to get your message out there.
The problem is, you don’t know where to begin.
As a side note, I have been blogging for over a decade and have built a career and a business around blogging and designing blogs. That said, a lot of people come to me for help because they think that only a blog “expert” or a web developer can set up a blog.
I’m here to tell you today that NO, you don’t need to be an expert to set up a blog.
This is no rocket science. If you can read and follow instructions, then you can absolutely set up your blog right away.
TODAY, if you want.
Like, right NOW. Game?

1. Register a domain name
I started blogging using free blogging platforms but it didn’t take a while before I realized that I needed to invest in my own domain name.
Here are the reasons why you should get a domain name:
- You want to eventually make money off your blog.
- You want to use your blog to promote an existing business or a potential business.
- You want to build up your personal brand and establish yourself as a thought leader in your passion or area of expertise.
- You care about the creative ownership of your content, and you want it in a space that you own. (This, for me, is the most important thing.)
If you ask me, I think you should get a domain name right off the bat. Having a unique domain name makes your readers think you’re serious about your blog from day one. More importantly, it puts a bit of pressure to yourself, which can be a good thing if you want to motivate yourself to take blogging seriously.
Decide on your unique blog name or brand and check if your preferred domain name is available.
2. Get web hosting
Web hosting and domain name are two different things but are often mistaken for the other. In layman’s term, web hosting is the space in the web where your website is stored, while your domain name is your website’s unique address. Example: This website is hosted by Dreamhost, and my domain name is www.chasingdreams.net.
In that note, I highly recommend that you get your domain name and web hosting from Dreamhost.
I’ve been using Dreamhost for 10 years now and I never considered moving to a different web hosting provider, EVER. Even when I encounter some technical issues every now and then—only a handful of issues in over a decade, that is—my experience with Dreamhost’s online customer support has always been satisfactory.
You can try to research about other web hosting providers too. There are cheaper options but cheap is not always a good thing. If you’ll take it from me, you should definitely use Dreamhost. With unlimited bandwidth and memory (plus unlimited domains, if you ever decide to launch more than just one website down the road), you get a great deal out of Dreamhost especially if you’re dead set on blogging for the long haul.
And because I’m feeling generous and I really believe that there’s a need for more passionate bloggers like you in the web today, I want to make this decision easier for you to make.
Take note that the 20% discount is applicable if you purchase the 1 year Shared Hosting Plan using my affiliate link.
Sounds like a deal? If you’re ready, just follow these steps and your domain and web hosting will be set up in no time! ;)
Full disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links, meaning, at no additional cost to you, I will earn a commission if you make a purchase.
3. Install WordPress
In all my years in the industry, we always recommend WordPress as a blogging platform because it’s FREE, it’s SEO-ready, and it has a massive community of third-party plugin developers and theme designers. Best of all, it allows non-technical users to optimize and customize pages even without touching the codes.
If you registered your domain and web hosting with Dreamhost, Wordpress installation comes free with the package. You just have to make sure you click the “Install WordPress” option before you check out.
You can also easily install WordPress through Dreamhost’s control panel after you checked out.
So how much does it really cost to set up a blog?
If you follow the above steps, the cost is $94.40 for one year. That means, you have 12 months to work on your blog and to get some ROI going. I don’t know about you but I think that’s a ridiculously small amount to pay to start blogging right.
When I launched my first hosted blog, I spent a lot more than that. But because I was convinced that this would generate me a stable income, support a profession I’m passionate about, and serve as my very own “creative playground”, I didn’t even have second thoughts about the small price I have to pay.
It was the best investment, ever. :)
Now it’s your turn to make that decision. I hope you make the right one!
